About Us

Bill Simpson is the founder and President of Azimuth Financial Planning located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He became a Certified Financial PlannerTM practitioner after earning a certificate in Financial Planning from Boston University, meeting the experience requirement, and passing the rigorous 10-hour CFP® exam. As a CFP® and a member of NAPFA he is required to complete 30 hour annually of continuing education, which far exceeds the requirements of most brokers and financial salesmen. In addition, he has a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a MBA from Boston College where he graduated with honors.

He formed the company in order to fulfill his goal to provide objective financial advice free of any conflict of interest. This dream came about in the early 90s after he graduated from Boston College's MBA program and began searching for his own financial advisor. What he encountered were advisors recommending products that profited them more than him, and advisors focused on selling products rather than providing sound financial advice. As a result he structured Azimuth Financial Planning as a fee-only financial advisory firm so the firm would have no incentive to act in any manner except in the clients’ best interest.

Prior to founding AFP, Bill was employed at The Harbor Group, a wealth management firm in Bedford, New Hampshire, providing financial planning and investment management services to affluent individuals and families. Bill is a member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors, the Financial Planning Association, and has the New Hampshire Accident, Health, and Life Insurance License, which enables him to offer insurance consulting services. He has appeared on WGIR AM 610 numerous times to discuss financial planning and investment related issues, been quoted in the Boston Globe, the Baltimore Sun, and contributed to the Boston.com online financial edition on college planning issues. He is also active in volunteer efforts to provide free independent financial advice to consumers as an advisor in programs such as the Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine’s “Jump-Start Your Retirement Planning Days”, and the "Your Money Bus" nationwide tour put on by the NAPFA Consumer Education Foundation, TD Ameritrade, and Kiplinger's.
